App store optimization (ASO)

Improving a mobile app's visibility and conversion rate within app store search and browse listings.

Also called: ASO

App store optimization is the practice of improving how an app ranks and converts within an app store's own search and browse surfaces — the app store equivalent of search engine optimization, but scoped to the store's internal ranking and the listing elements it controls, such as title, keywords, screenshots, preview video, icon, and ratings.

ASO work splits into two connected efforts: improving discoverability (ranking higher for relevant searches, similar in spirit to keyword research for the web) and improving conversion once a user lands on the listing (the share of listing views that become installs, influenced heavily by screenshots, icon, and star rating). Unlike paid user acquisition, ASO is aimed at organic traffic already flowing through the store, though paid and organic performance often interact, since higher install volume from any source can improve organic ranking.

ASO matters because app stores remain a primary discovery channel for new apps, and small listing changes can measurably shift install-to-view conversion at no incremental media cost. Common pitfalls include keyword stuffing that violates a store's guidelines, changing multiple listing elements at once so it's unclear which change drove a result, and treating install volume as success without checking, via install attribution or a mobile measurement partner, whether those installs convert into active, retained users.
