Verdict
Both are long-running web A/B testing platforms running client- and server-side experiments, and both remain associated in most buyers' minds with the earliest wave of website experimentation tools. Optimizely's Stats Engine, developed with Stanford researchers, uses a mixture Sequential Probability Ratio Test to produce "always-valid" p-values that stay sound even when checked repeatedly — but the bigger change at Optimizely is that "the company" now means a much wider Agentic Experience suite spanning CMS, commerce, content marketing and a data platform, individually packaged and quoted, so evaluating "Optimizely" today often means evaluating a multi-product platform.
VWO runs on SmartStats, a Bayesian engine using Beta-Binomial models and Monte Carlo sampling that reports a probability of beating the baseline rather than a p-value, with a Region of Practical Equivalence to ignore trivially small uplifts. VWO's parent, Wingify, acquired competitor AB Tasty in January 2026, and by September 2026 the two products were unified under a single Wingify brand spanning experimentation, personalization, feature management and more — legacy VWO logins still work through the transition, but VWO as a fully independent product is now a company in consolidation, not a static choice.
Choose Optimizely if
- You want sequential, always-valid statistical testing with academic rigor behind the method.
- You're also evaluating or already using Optimizely's CMS, commerce or data platform products, where bundling has real value.
- Server-side and feature-flag experimentation alongside classic web A/B testing matters to your roadmap.
Choose VWO if
- You want Bayesian-first reporting ("probability to win") as the default way results are communicated to non-statisticians.
- Web personalization and behavior analytics (session recording) alongside testing are useful in the same product.
- You're comfortable evaluating a platform mid-consolidation, understanding that VWO and AB Tasty are converging under one Wingify brand.
What they share
Both are cloud-hosted, quote-only, and aimed at product, growth and marketing teams running structured experimentation programs rather than engineering-led feature rollouts. Both list each other, and AB Tasty, as direct alternatives — reflecting how much this specific corner of the market overlaps.
The honest caveat
Neither publishes pricing, so a side-by-side cost comparison isn't possible without a sales conversation for both. And VWO's ownership situation is genuinely in flux: if you're signing a multi-year contract, ask directly how the Wingify unification with AB Tasty will affect your specific plan, support and roadmap before assuming today's VWO is what you'll be using in two years.
