Verdict
Dune and Glassnode both turn blockchain data into usable on-chain analytics, but they sit on opposite sides of the build-versus-buy line. Dune decodes raw on-chain transactions into structured, queryable tables and lets you write SQL against them yourself — it's how most public protocol and NFT dashboards in crypto actually get built, and it rewards teams willing to write and maintain their own queries. Glassnode instead sells the finished product: hundreds to well over a thousand precomputed metrics — exchange flows, holder distribution, valuation models like MVRV and SOPR — delivered through charts, dashboards and an API, aimed at teams who want a ready-made signal rather than a query engine.
Choose Dune if
- You want direct access to decoded on-chain data and are comfortable writing SQL to shape it yourself.
- Your question isn't covered by a standard precomputed metric, or you need to combine on-chain data with your own logic.
- You want to publish and fork public dashboards, or build on top of community-maintained decoded data models (Spellbook).
Choose Glassnode if
- You want standard, well-known on-chain valuation and flow metrics without building them from raw transaction data.
- You value a consistent, maintained set of indicators over flexibility to query anything.
- You need deep historical depth and higher-resolution data, available on its Professional tier alongside API access.
What they share
Both are browser-based with a published API for pulling results into your own systems, and both start with a real free tier before gating deeper access behind a paid plan (Glassnode's is a published monthly price at the Advanced tier; Dune's paid tiers were not fully published at the time of writing). Both are also listed as alternatives to each other's category leader, Nansen, for teams whose real need is wallet-level attribution rather than protocol-level metrics — see choosing a crypto analytics tool for that comparison.
