Verdict

Both serve financial advisory firms, and both appear on each other's alternatives list, but they are not solving the identical problem. Addepar is built around one hard problem done well: aggregating positions from many custodians and outside managers, including illiquid and alternative holdings, into a single reliable view with scenario modeling and AI-assisted insight tools on top. Orion is a wider operating platform — portfolio accounting and reporting, Redtail CRM, trading and rebalancing, financial planning and compliance workflows, plus optional TAMP/OCIO services — aimed at running more of a firm's day-to-day operation from one vendor.

The decision usually comes down to how much of your stack you want from a single provider, and how complex your clients' actual holdings are.

Choose Addepar if

  • Your clients hold complex, multi-custodian or alternative-heavy portfolios where accurate aggregation is the hard part.
  • You already have a CRM, trading and compliance stack you're happy with and want a best-of-breed reporting and aggregation layer, not a replacement for those systems.
  • Client-facing performance reporting and scenario modeling (Navigator) are the priority over back-office workflow consolidation.

Choose Orion if

  • You want portfolio accounting, CRM, trading and compliance from one integrated platform rather than stitching several vendors together.
  • You are open to also using Orion's TAMP, OCIO or custom-indexing services rather than only the software.
  • Consolidating vendor relationships and reducing integration overhead matters more than having the single best point solution for any one function.

The honest caveat

Neither vendor publishes pricing, so cost cannot be compared on paper — both are sold through a consultation-based enterprise process, and the real cost driver for each is typically assets under management, seat count and the number of custodian or system integrations required. A firm evaluating both should ask each vendor to price against its actual client book and current tech stack, not a generic tier, and should separately weigh the cost and disruption of migrating existing CRM, trading or compliance workflows if choosing Orion's bundled approach over Addepar's narrower one.
